Episode 43 - The Barbecue Murders & The 27 Club
In this episode, Erika covers the barbecue murders. On June 21, 1975 in Terra Linda, San Rafael, California Jim and Naomi Olive would lose their lives. They would be brutally murdered by their very own adoptive daughter and her boyfriend. Their daughter Marlene was 16 at the time and her boyfriend was 19years old. The two met while he was dealing drugs at her High School. It was not love at first sight for Marlene, but even still Charles “Chuck” Riley would pursue her. She would eventually “fall for his ways” but it seemed more like she realized that she could easily manipulate Riley since up to that point he had never had a girlfriend. Marlene had a very strained relationship with her adoptive mother Naomi, but had a wonderful relationship with Jim her adoptive father. That was until he lost his job in Ecuador and had to move the family back to the United States. He started his own business and to get that going he wasn’t home much and wasn’t able to spend as much time with Marlene. She began to be resentful and the fighting with her mother got to be more and more often and sometimes even involved violence. Marlene masterminded a plan to kill her parents, and made Rile part of it.

Then Amber covers the 27 club. The 27 club is used to describe a group of artists (specifically the 6 musicians: Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain & Amy Winehouse) who all died at the age of 27. The lives and deaths of these artists had many parallels leading many to speculate that the death at age 27 was no coincidence.
